A celebration of the democratisation of culture and the impact that gifts of all sizes can make.

Now open for entries.

The Achates Philanthropy Prize is the national campaign to promote cultural democracy. Launched in 2016, the Prize exists to achieve the following aims:

● To raise awareness of cultural organisations as charities that need philanthropic support;

● To promote the idea that anyone can be a cultural philanthropist;

● To celebrate the impact that being a cultural philanthropist of any scale can bring.

How to apply:

Organisations are invited to nominate in one of two categories: one for an individual or trust and one for a company, for the example they've set in supporting culture for the first time in the last year. The winning individual / trust and company each receive one of the Awards which have been commissioned from renowned sculptor, Peter Brooke-Ball MRBS, of which they are custodian for a year. The nominating cultural organisations each receive a £5,000 donation from the Cultural Philanthropy Foundation.

FAQs

  • Call for entries opens 10 am Wednesday 29 June 2022 and closes 5pm on Monday 12 September 2022.

  • Entries are open to all UK charities, including those who have nominated in previous years. All 2022 entries must identify a new nomination to be considered.

  • Yes. Each organisation can make one nomination in each category.

  • Where an individual is giving tax effectively through a charitable trust, they are eligible for nomination.

  • We define a gift to the arts from a philanthropist or business who has not previously given in a meaningful way to your organisation. We encourage organisations to consider gifts of all sizes, types, and forms of support.

  • No. The gift must have been received in the twelve-month period between September 2021 and September 2022 to qualify for the 2022 Prize. Discretion will be given at the approval of the judges where it can be shown that a pledge has been received but the funds have not yet been paid.

  • Whilst we realise that some philanthropy might comprise a mix of both personal

    wealth and a contribution through business, it must be made clear whether you are nominating for the Individual or Corporate Prize. Organisations are welcome to nominate the same philanthropist for the Individual and Corporate Prize, as long as it is clear in each application that the contributions are distinct.

  • Yes. The Corporate Award celebrates meaningful, innovative partnerships that benefit cultural organisations and showcase the strategic approach they have employed to secure and build on them. Eligible partnerships can be sponsorship, or philanthropic in either cash or kind. We recognise that cultural organisations may offer benefits in return for this support.

  • We recognise that philanthropic giving is proportional to an individual’s wealth or a business’s profit, which is why we encourage nominations for significant and meaningful first-time gifts. These might not qualify as a major gift for an organisation, but may be recognised as such by the donor. We also encourage nominations which recognise philanthropists and businesses giving in innovative and interesting ways, which might include the gift of time or resources, partnerships and consortia models or community groups approaches, such as a group of individual donors working together.

  • We understand that some donors may not wish their generosity to be publicised. The aim of the Prize is to raise awareness of the arts as charities, and secondly to tell stories that develop awareness of the idea that anyone can be a philanthropist and that it's a rewarding thing to do.

    We feel the greatest driver for championing this message is complete transparency. But, if your donor is happy for us to tell their story if they win, it is fine for them to remain anonymous. It may be helpful to note that our previous winners have not received any unsolicited asks for support and have greatly enjoyed the experience.

  • The Cultural Philanthropy Foundation (previously the Achates Philanthropy Foundation) is a UK registered charity, number 1173008 which was established in 2016 to act as an incubator for innovation in the cultural sector, encouraging new philanthropy and improving organisational resilience.

    We are best known for administering the Achates Philanthropy Prize, launched in 2016, which supports the democratisation of cultural philanthropy and celebrates the impact of cultural philanthropy, across the UK.

    The Foundation campaigns for the democratisation of culture through the creation of platforms, such as our artist-led symposium, All That’s Been Revealed, in 2021, and the virtual week-long conference, Art, Audiences and Money in 2020.

    We believe that culture creates 8 types of value, which we advocate for. We understand that in order to ensure a society where everyone has access to culture, as is our human right, we need to articulate and celebrate that value. This is the focus of the sector-wide Culture is Creating campaign.

    Who funds and owns culture is a form of power, so the democratisation of cultural philanthropy is a central pillar of our work. We promote the idea that culture belongs to and is the responsibility of us all and that anyone can be a cultural philanthropist. Culture builds empathy with, and across communities, philanthropy is a barometer of the relationship cultural organisations have with their communities and helps them to enable sustainability, and relevance.

  • We encourage nominating organisations Achates Philanthropy Prize branding to promote their application. All logos for the Achates Philanthropy Prize and the Cultural Philanthropy Foundation can be used for this explicit purpose, with the understanding that they are neither licensed nor owned by third parties as a part of this process. All copyright of such images and use of sponsor names remains at the express discretion of each respective owner and permissions may be suspended or stopped without warning. Full details on the use of this material will be outlined in our toolkit sent to all shortlisted organisations.

  • Income from Arts Council England’s Grants for the Arts awards can be counted within your organisation’s voluntary income and is recognised as separate from any additional National Portfolio Organisation income you might be receiving.

  • The Prize celebrates businesses, individuals and trusts, who have made their first philanthropic donation to a cultural organisation in the last twelve months. As a charitable subsidiary does not represent active philanthropic giving in this sense, we are not able to accept any nominations made on this basis.

  • If you have alternative questions, or any difficulties completing the application form, please write to Oonagh Murphy, Director, Cultural Philanthropy Foundation on achatesphilanthropy.prize@gmail.com. Questions directed to Achates Philanthropy Associates will not be responded to.

    Questions received after 5pm on Thursday 8th September 2022 may not be addressed, so please ensure you send your question with good time.
